Weekend Street Festivals

There were many competing street festivals around the Bronx today, and I visited two of them in the Northwest Bronx. The Kingsbridge Heights Neighborhood Association had a Health Fair on Reservoir Avenue, while the Jerome Gun Hill BID had Jerome Avenue closed from Gun Hill Road to East 208th Street. Below are a few photos of each event.

Left - Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz and soon to be Councilman Andrew Cohen stopped by the Kingsbridge Heights Health Fair being held on Reservoir.
Right - Cohen, Dinowitz, and KHNIA members pose for this photo in front of the giant inflatable exercise ball used at the Health Fair.

It was a different story on Jerome Avenue as you see in both photos. Vendors lined both sides of Jerome Avenue with almost anything you wanted.

Montefiore Hospital was a main sponsor of the event.

Primary Day 2013 - The Bronx Results?

In what was a light turnout the results of yesterday's primary races are in, but will not be official for at least three weeks. For Democratic Mayor Bill DeBlasio ended the night slightly over the magical 40% line to win without having to go into a run off election, but there are still to many absentee and paper ballots that have to be counted which could place DeBlasio below that magical 40% line. If DeBlasio falls below 40% by even one vote he would be forced into a run off with Bill Thompson who finished second.
On the Republican side for Mayor Joe Lhota won, and should DeBlasio win on the Democratic side we might be seeing  "No Holds Barred"  in a Giuliani - Dinkins III rematch.
There will be a run off election for Public Advocate in three weeks on October 1st as none of the 5 candidates went over the magical (citywide only) 40% mark between Brooklyn State Senator Dan Squadron and Brooklyn Councilwoman Letitia James.
For City Comptroller Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer narrowly defeated former New York State Governor Eliot Spitzer.
Here in the Bronx, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. was an easy winner coming in with 84% of the vote. Incumbent Bronx City Council members in the 8th, 12th, 14th, 17th, & 18th districts all won, and 13th Councilman Jimmy Vacca did not have a primary. In the open Bronx council seats- 11th Andrew Cohen won by a better than 2 - 1 margin, 15th Ritchie Torres won with a little over 1/3 of the vote, and in the 16th 77th A.D. Assemblywoman Vanessa Gibson won with over 40% of the vote.
In the special election to fill the vacant 86th A.D. Victor Pachardo won with 22% of the vote, but by less than 65 votes (64 to be exact). It is expected (by me at least) that the winner of this race may not be determined by Thanksgiving or Christmas.

Here are past 11th City Councilwoman June Eisland, current 11th City Councilman Oliver Koppell, and in the middle the next 11th City Councilman Andrew Cohen.

Left - 11th council district primary winner Andrew Cohen goes over the long list of names he thanked in his win.
Right - One time 11th council district Democratic candidate Cheryl Keeling (right) stopped by to congratulate Cohen on his victory, poses with soon to be Councilman Andrew Cohen's wife Heather Erhard-Cohen. Keeling was knocked off the ballot by Cliff Stanton who ran against Cohen.

Lastly - A photo to remember if you are 87th A.D. Assemblyman Luis Sepulveda who went against the Bronx Democratic County organization to be the first Bronx elected official to publicly endorse Bill DeBlasio for Mayor. Sepulveda worked tirelessly for the Deblasio campaign turning his Parkchester political club into the Bronx Campaign headquarters for DeBlasio. Could we be seeing Assemblyman Sepulveda joining the DeBlasio administration?

Cohen to Win 11th Council District Easy

Here is this weeks Riverdale Report from the Bronx News.

Cohen to Win 11th Council District Easy

As I wrote back in July, I still think that 11th City council candidate Andrew Cohen will be victorious, and by a huge margin over his opponent Cliff Stanton. My prediction then was and still is that Andrew Cohen will get 83 percent of the vote recorded for the 11th City Council race with a margin of error of 5 percent. Mr. Stanton never set the district on fire in the year advantage he had since announcing his candidacy in January of 2012. There was disappointment after disappointment during the campaign when certain people who had expressed interest in running decided not to and they then endorsed Andrew Cohen. Mr. Stanton has campaigned hard in the Norwood, Bedford Park, Kingsbridge, Kingsbridge Heights, and Van Cortlandt Village areas, but knocking off the ballot a Hispanic man and a Black woman might not have been the best strategy if one wants to win in minority areas of the district. I have been told by some people who might have voted for him that it is that and some of those who Mr. Stanton has aligned himself with that had turned them away from voting for him. I know that I will be voting for Andrew Cohen when I go to vote in the 11th City Council district.
So don't forget to go out and vote on Primary Day Tuesday September 10th. For Republicans there is only a race for Mayor, while for Democrats it is for Mayor, City Comptroller, Public Advocate, Bronx Borough President and City Council if you live in the 8th, 11th, 12th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th, and 18th districts in the Bronx. Since the Primary Day results will not be in until after our publishing deadline I will have the results in two weeks for you. You can check my blog the day after election day for the results. Four years ago I called the 11th City Council race with in one percentage point.
Last Tuesday State Senator Jeff Klein hosted a concert in Seton Park by the wonderful Dionne Warwick. It was estimated that over 1,000 people came out to see Ms. Warwick sing her great songs in person. One could hear the sing along from many in the audience as the 72 year old Ms. Warwick kept singing hit after hit. The little longer than one hour non stop performance seemed to go by as minutes some people said to me after the concert. To see more of the concert with photos of Ms. Warwick, and the politicians who were there you can go to my blog at www.100percentbronx.blogspot.com.
Also on my blog is the latest listing of events that are going on at Wave Hill. The Friends of Van Cortlandt Park have a busy schedule coming up in the fall, and you can see it on my blog. Just check the archive section on the lower left and check the previous month August for the listings.
Bronx Community Board #8 is gearing up to get back into business after a short summer vacation, so you may want to go to the CB8 website to check out the meetings, dates, places, and topics of discussion as they are scheduled by the board and its committees.

Join Letitica James & Fernando Cabrera at The Kingsbridge Armory/NWBx Dems

Having already endorsed candidates in the 11th and 15th City Council districts that they have been on the payroll of the NWBx/Dems today endorsed two other candidates. Public Advocate Letitia James was scheduled to appear, but was in Brooklyn so one of her campaign workers came. Incumbent 14th City Councilman Fernando Cabrera, in a tight primary race this year accepted the endorsement of the NWBx/Dems this time around. While he appeared in photos with two other City Council District candidates endorsed by the NWBx/Dems 14th City Councilman Fernando Cabrera said in no way was he endorsing the other candidates in the photos with him. Councilman Cabrera said that he is working to help elect Candidate Joel R. Rivera in the 15th City Council District. An aide to Councilman Cabrera said that Councilman Fernando Cabrera was endorsing Andrew Cohen in the 11th City Council District. Both 15th council district candidate Joel R. Rivera and 11th council district candidate Andrew Cohen have not been endorsed by the NWBx/Dems. The endorsement took place in front of the Kingsbridge Armory on Kingsbridge Road in the 14th Council District.

Left - The two candidates endorsed by the NWBx/Dems are in the middle of the photo. Cliff Stanton 11th council district, and Cynthia Thompkins 15th council district.
Right - When he arrived  14th City Councilman Fernando Cabrera stood at the left end of the photo as not to be next to candidates he has not endorsed.

Hoffnung Decides Not to Run and Endorses Cohen

In what was expected to be a long awaited announcement that he was going to enter the race for the 11th City Council seat to replace term limited Councilman G. Oliver Koppell, Ari Hoffnung has decided to endorse leading candidate Andrew Cohen for the 11th council seat instead. Ari Hoffnung who ran for the 11th City Council seat in 2005 said that he would be making a decision as far back as January 1st of this year, but kept pushing it off. Recently Hoffnung was told that the almost $82,000.00 in his campaign account from 2005 be would eligible for matching funds this year, but that he could not raise any new funds as long as he was Deputy Comptroller. Hoffnung tried to put together a campaign this year, but as candidate Andrew Cohen had locked up all the local elected officials, most of the many mayoral candidates, and the powerful Ben Franklin Democratic Club endorsements there was little if any left to get. Cohen's current major opponent Cliff Stanton has only the endorsement of a group of hired mercenaries whose leader is now on the Stanton payroll.
After several hard thinking months Ari Hoffnung thought that it would be better for himself, his young children, and a pregnant wife if he decided to endorse his neighbor and friend Andrew Cohen rather then put his family through a tough campaign that he might not win. I asked if his endorsement would lead to John Liu endorsing candidate Cohen, Hoffnung said that he could not speak for Comptroller Liu on that subject. Of the money still left in his campaign war chest, Hoffnung said that the city would get the matching funds while he would still keep the campaign active for a possible future run.

Cohen Picks up Endorsement of Padernacht in 11th Council District

In front of the Shalom Aleichem Houses in the Van Cortlandt Village section of the Bronx, where Mr. Dan Padernacht both works and lives, he brought out several of his supporters to endorse the candidacy of Andrew Cohen for the 11th City Council seat. Mr. Padernacht is best known from 2010 when he entered the race for the 33rd State Senate that was occupied then by State Senator Pedro Espada Jr. Mr. Padernacht a member of Community Board 8 and has been the Chairman of the boards Traffic & Transportation Committee the past few years. It was rumored that Mr. Padernacht would be running for the 11th council seat currently occupied by term limited Councilman G. Oliver Koppel, but after speculation that Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz would run it held back Mr. Padernachts council campaign. While Padernacht felt he could easily beat the only announced candidate at the time Mr. Cliff Stanton, he had to contemplate the candidacy of Assemblyman Dinowitz.  Mr. Andrew Cohen later decided to go ahead with his campaign for city council, and started to rack up the endorsements of the local elected officials as well as many others including numerous unions. With petition gathering for the September Primary only a few weeks away it was time to decide to continue a candidacy for city council or endorse one of the announced candidates. Mr. Padernacht chose to endorse the candidacy of fellow Community Board 8 member and friend, Andrew Cohen for the 11th City Council seat citing Mr. Cohen's record of achievement and commitment to the community.

Candidate Andrew Cohen said  “Dan Padernacht's credentials as an activist committed to the community and city are familiar to all of us who care for the Bronx". “As the Chair of the Traffic and Transportation Committee for Community Board 8, Dan has stood up to irresponsible developers, always putting the will of the people and the betterment of our neighborhoods first. His endorsement is an important validation for my campaign and I welcome his support with enthusiasm as we work together to make the 11th Council District even better.”

Cohen Picks up Endorsement of Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.

Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. endorsed Andrew Cohen, a Riverdale attorney and Community Board member, in his race to succeed the term-limited Oliver Koppell for the council’s 11th district seat. The announcement was made in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx and was followed by a walking tour of the important project sites throughout the Kingsbridge business district.

"I need partners like Andrew Cohen in the City Council. We have seen major gains in the northwest Bronx--and in every corner of this great borough. Andrew Cohen knows what this district needs to continue to see positive growth, and I am proud to support him for City Council," said Bronx Borough president Ruben Diaz Jr.

“Being recognized by Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr. is special not only because of his experience in state and city government, but because of his personal experience as a lifelong Bronxite,” Cohen said. “He knows what it takes to get things done and how to bring diverse constituencies together. With the Borough President’s help, I will work to bring all of the communities of the 11th Council District together to fight for sensible economic development and good jobs. His leadership on living wage, paid sick leave and his proposal for a gun crime registry demonstrate his commitment progressive policies that can improve the lives of people here in the Northwest Bronx. I hope to join Borough President Diaz as part of a new generation of leaders that, through broad coalitions, can make city government work for all of us.”
